Mumbai’s last Irani Cup victory came during the 1997-98 season and since then, the domestic powerhouse appeared in eight more finals without success, the last of which was in the 2015-16 season.

The Mumbai Cricket Association will felicitate the Ajinkya Rahane-led side in a ceremony after it clinched its first Irani Cup in 27 years.

Mumbai romped to their 15th Irani Cup victory on the basis of their first-innings lead of 121 runs over Rest of India in Lucknow. Despite the wicket of Sarfaraz Khan early on, Mumbai's lower-order remained resolute as the match ended in a draw. Mumbai won their first Irani Cup win after 27 years.

The Irani Cup victory follows Mumbai's historic previous season, where they clinched their 42nd Ranji Trophy title at the Wankhede Stadium. The team defeated Vidarbha by 169 runs in an unforgettable final match. Besides this, the team has won the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) four times and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) once.

Saransh Jain’s two quick wickets hinted at a very interesting last day’s play. Tanush Kotian, the reliable allrounder, then found Mohit Avasthi for company as the duo’s record partnership ensured Mumbai lay its hands on the Irani Cup after a gap of 27 years.
