Hedi Slimane has left LVMH’s Celine brand, marking the latest high-profile departure from a fashion label as the industry grapples with a sales downturn.

Hedi Slimane, the high priest of the skinny silhouette, is officially exiting Celine. And his replacement is already suiting up. Several hours after the Slimane news, Celine named the American designer Michael Rider as the French house’s new artistic director.

Hedi Slimane is leaving Celine after seven years as creative director of the French fashion. He is credited with introducing menswear and fragrances.

Michael Rider is the new creative director at Celine, the LVMH-owned fashion house announced on Wednesday. His appointment will take effect in early 2025. He will have the entire creative responsibility of all Celine collections, including womenswear, menswear, leather goods and accessories to couture, the statement reads.

In 2018, LVMH announced that Slimane would take over from Phoebe Philo as creative director of Celine. Philo had spent a decade in the role but Slimane was quick to make changes, dropping the accent from original brand name “Céline” in a logo redesign and changing up the entire fashion house’s aesthetic.

On Wednesday morning, LVMH confirmed that Hedi Slimane would be departing from Celine after a seven-year tenure as the House’s creative director. “Under his creative and artistic direction, Celine has experienced exceptional growth and established itself as an iconic French couture house,” the brand said in a statement to WWD .
