Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over three bases used by the United States Air Force in Britain, the two countries have confirmed.

The US Air Force (USAF) said that a number of small unidentified drones were detected around three airbases in the United Kingdom over the past week. The US Air Forces in Europe said "small unmanned aerial systems" were seen over Royal Air Force (RAF) Lakenheath,

The USAF, which uses the bases, said it was unclear at this stage whether the drones were considered hostile. It also declined to comment on whether any defence mechanisms were used, but said it retained "the right to protect" installations.

The drones appeared at different times between Wednesday and Saturday and hovered over the Royal Air Force’s Mildenhall, Feltwell and Lakenheath bases
