Severe weather alerts warning of a "significant threat to life" are appearing on phones across the UK due to a testing error, the Met Office has said.

The Met Office has apologised after “severe” hot weather alerts were accidentally sent to mobile phones.The alerts were mistakenly sent out during testing on Thursday, incorrectly warning the public of a “significant threat to life” from high temperatures.

Ironically, despite the faulty alerts, the Met Office had actually forecast "milder temperatures" for today, and its five-day outlook indicated dry conditions for eastern areas with potential frost and fog overnight, whereas the west was expected to be milder with winds, coastal gales in the northwest, and some rainfall.
