With all of Sacramento's votes counted and verified, Kevin McCarty will be the city's next mayor. Reflecting on the race, Dr. Flojaune Cofer says the close result shows the growth of a movement.

McCarty’s victory is over opponent and epidemiologist Flojaune Cofer. The final election results showed McCarty with 50.51% of the 190,923 ballots counted, as of 3 p.m. Monday. Cofer had secured 49.49%, a mere 1,941 votes behind McCarty.

McCarty, a Democrat who represented Sacramento in the Capitol for nearly a decade, was the more moderate candidate in the race to succeed Mayor Darrell Steinberg and had been expected to win. Cofer, a progressive, grew her public profile as an activist in the wake of the police shooting of Stephon Clark.
